Endometrial Scratch
What is an Endometrial Scratch?
An endometrial scratch is a simple procedure offered to patients who have experienced unsuccessful IVF treatment using good quality embryos. The procedure involves passing a thin catheter through the cervix and “scratching” the endometrium (the lining of the womb) in an attempt to improve the implantation rate of the embryos. The theory behind the endometrial scratch is that it induces a “repair reaction” within the womb, which stimulates growth factors and increases the chances of pregnancy. The evidence available with respect to the effectiveness of the scratch in relation to IVF outcomes is not firmly established.
It takes approximately 15 – 20 minutes to perform the procedure and is similar to a cervical smear test. Patients are advised to take pain medication prior to the appointment.
When should it be done?
It is usually recommended that the endometrial scratch is carried out during the second half of the cycle prior to commencing IVF or FET treatment. Our fertility team will advise you on the best time for the procedure.
